How did the company start?
M² was founded in 1988 when Marion McGovern, a former management consultant with Booz Allen Hamilton, saw that consulting projects were often better performed by a single, qualified consultant than by a team of eager, smart, but freshly minted MBAs as part of a large management consulting firm. The challenge was how to find and qualify those individual, seasoned consultants and deliver that solution to clients. Over the years, we have developed the original M² concept into a highly targeted consulting model. » Top

We commit to clients that we will respond quickly and provide solutions on their timetable, often within days. We communicate thoroughly at all stages of our process, from working with clients to define the project, to following through during and after the engagement to ensure success.

To maximize our effectiveness, we divide the client services function into two parts. Our Business Development team works with clients, getting to know their companies and challenges. Our Consultant Services team works with our consultant community, matching the right individual or team to a client engagement. This organizational structure enables us to partner with clients and consultants alike to provide the best and highest quality service. It also ensures that we don’t force-fit solutions. M² consultants are former Big Four consultants or industry specialists who have chosen to leverage their expertise independently. Most have been working in their field for more than 15 years. Their high-level experience runs the gamut of the corporate world. Where do your consultants come from?
M² Consultants come from our proprietary consultant community, developed over our twenty years in the business. Most of these consultants come through referrals from clients and existing M² consultants. In addition, we actively recruit experienced, qualified professionals in emerging and high-demand fields. We tap into local and national networking groups and professional associations to ensure we have a robust flow of qualified and credentialed consultants to meet the needs of our clients. » Top

How can an interim manager knowledgeably run my business?
M² maintains a specialized group of the most senior managers in a range of industries. When a client needs a top manager, we look there first. Many of our executives have had experience filling interim top-management positions, and we can often find someone with the optimal combination of background and industry experience.

We work with you and our consultants to find the right person for the job. We also perform substantial due diligence, interviewing references, outlining the situation, and getting a real sense of how well the executive would handle the situation. » Top

How do you ensure the confidentiality of my business information?
Confidentiality and integrity have always been cornerstones of our relationship with our clients. We take great pains to assure that our consultants will not divulge or in any way compromise the proprietary aspects of the client’s business, and every consultant signs a non-disclosure agreement. In some situations, client projects are so sensitive that we attach additional confidentiality terms to our agreement. If my consultant has projects from other clients, will my needs come first?
Specific deliverables for your engagement are laid out in an M² confirmation letter before the start of the engagement to ensure that your requirements are met as planned. » Top

How do your rates compare with those of other consulting firms?
Our business model of working with independent consultants enables us to keep overhead costs low. As a result, our rates are usually more cost-effective when compared to major consulting firms. Moreover, an M² consultant is far more likely to have the precise industry and functional knowledge you need, providing even greater value.

How can I be sure of consultant credentials?
Once we have determined that a consultant is qualified to work for M², we conduct rigorous due-diligence to verify credentials. All of our consultants provide business references, rather than personal ones. We interview former managers and clients, rather than peers. We also conduct standard employment and education verifications as well as criminal investigations using consumer reporting agencies. We abide by Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) regulations in handling that process. » Top
